Welcome to Murales Fronterizos!

How to Navigate our site?

Please take a look at the various locations where we have found murals. We hope to expand to the locations that do not have their murals displayed here. Overall, we want to capture the ephemeral art and share it with the wider Borderlands community. We want to include the works and words of artists, community members, and those looking to engage with these murals in other ways as well so we built this website with that growth in mind.

?Usted Lees EspaΓ±ol?

We are working to have a corresponding Spanish version of this website as we expand you will see Spanish versions of each page added below in the organization tab at the top of the website page. We feel that the Spanish reading community is just as important as the English readers.

What is our Mission?

We are collecting public art pieces that represent different parts of the Borderlands. We will continue to display the murals that have covered our cities, towns, and communities with beauty and culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who worked on this project?

We have several steps of the project including Murals of Las Cruces, Murals of El Paso, and expanded collection for this project. We have had students from New Mexico State University work on this version of the project. On Murals of Las Cruces it was also NMSU affiliates and for El Paso it was those associated with the community college. We also hope as we connect more with the community they can become more involved in the project.

How are we working to engage with communities?

We are trying to expand to include those who can reach out to us with information so our collections capacity can be met with the community in mind and as partners. Art is about power, resistance, and love. It often represents aspects of communities. Murals are ephemeral and as communities continue to change with time so will their art.

What is this online exhibit, museum, and database space’s purpose?

Murales Fronterious is for our communities: those that live with the art, the artists, scholars, students, and all those impacted by public art. Our focus is on an archive that could archive the art we collected for a wide community. The art may not last on the streets they live but they can last here.

What about Murals?

Public art reminds us of our communities and what we value. We value the sister cities of the region and seek to celebrate the art that represents us. Art is a space of resistance, power, hope, and love. As you go through the site remember that all these sit in the neighborhoods, street corners, public fences, and all the corners of our cities. Go visit the places where these art pieces are displayed. Time may erode the pieces and people may cover them up, but they will, though ephemeral, remind us of what our communities look like and what stories we are seeking to tell.

What work went into this project?

We have collected for Las Cruces and combined the work from Murals of El Paso. We have an Instagram and work on community engagement for when the website goes live.

What are our hopes for the project?

We want to be more accessible in the future allowing for things to be read in Spanish on the website. We want to connect to Ciudad Juarez and gain a Mexican audience that we can engage with.

Is there more to do?

There is more we need to do. We want to continue to collect and expand to other Borderlands cities. We are excited to build a wider public arts community throughout the Southwest.
