Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado

Alvarez, who was raised in El Paso but born in Juárez, preserves history because he values Chicano and indigenous history. The Mayan word "Cimi" refers to the idea of constant progress in that society.

His process typically incorporates parts of the community and is wholly grounded to the area he works in at any time. In addition to preserving his neighborhood's past, he is dedicated to nurturing young artists, which is one of the motivations behind his co-founding of Kalavera Culture Shop, a brand-new location in El Paso where budding artists can purchase art supplies at low prices and discover a supportive artistic community.
